Those that have traveled to Japan know what it is like to experience fabulous Japanese customer service and hospitality at shops, restaurants, department stores, taxis, train stations, business meetings, and chance encounters with strangers. This level of hospitality makes traveling to Japan so rewarding and memorable. The culture of Omotenashi (Japanese: おもてなし) can be described as selfless and mindful attention to the customer or guest by providing services and assistance with no expectation of anything in return and going beyond simply meeting customers' needs to make them feel valued, heard, and respected. [resources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] This type of hospitable customer service requires thoughtful consideration and care, a deep understanding of customers' needs, and anticipating any issues they may face. We can create truly meaningful relationships with our customers that last over time by embedding Omotenashi's core principles into our Customer Success strategy:
- Anticipation: Anticipate your customers' needs, proactively address issues they may encounter, and tend to their journey details by "walking in their shoes." These will help deliver a more personalized customer experience.
- Empathy: Understand your customers' sentiments by ensuring they feel heard and respected. To do this requires a deeper understanding of customer goals and motivations, which can be achieved through establishing meaningful rapport with them and continually gathering feedback to adjust your service strategy accordingly.
- Authenticity: Be genuinely grateful for every customer interaction with you and your product. Authenticity makes customers more valued and appreciated, creates a sense of transparency, and builds trust. When customers feel that they are dealing with a genuine, honest, and reliable CSM, Service Agent, or Support Engineer, they are more likely to feel comfortable with the product they are using and confident in their purchase decision.
The Omotenashi principles help build customer loyalty and repeat business. Customer loyalty by creating more positive and memorable experiences and repeat business because customers are more likely to do business where they feel genuine, authentic service.
